Color by number vs free coloring: which one is for you?
One mode tells you every color, the other hands you the whole box. Both are relaxing in different ways. Here is how to choose.

In this guide
Color by number gives every area a number that matches a color, so you never have to decide what goes where. It is best when you want to switch your brain off. Free coloring lets you pick any color for any area, which is best when you want to be creative. In Colour Cozy you trace the picture first, then choose either mode, and you can switch whenever you like.
Open any coloring app and you will usually find two ways to play. In color by number, every area is labelled with a number and you match it to the right color. In free coloring, the picture is blank and every choice is yours.
So, color by number vs free coloring: which wins? Neither mode is better. They scratch different itches. This guide explains how each one works, who it suits, and how to get the most out of both in Colour Cozy.
How color by number works
Color by number is a simple, satisfying loop. The picture is split into areas, each area shows a number, and the color row at the bottom shows which color belongs to each number.
In Colour Cozy it goes like this:
- Trace the lines. Follow the outline with your finger to wake the picture up.
- Tap a number in the color row to pick its color.
- Tap an area to fill it, or paint it stroke by stroke with a tool like the marker or crayon.
- Move to the next number when you finish all areas with the current one.
- Watch it come alive when the last area is filled.
If you tap a color that does not belong in an area, a gentle hint shows you the right number. There is no penalty and no timer.

How free coloring works
In free coloring there are no numbers. You choose any color for any area. That means the same dumpling picture can be golden and realistic, pastel and dreamy, or neon and wild.
Free coloring in Colour Cozy uses colour packs. The Rainbow pack is free from the start, and more packs, Pastel, Neon, Candy, Ocean, Sunset, Forest and Galaxy, can be unlocked once with an optional video or with gems and kept for good.
If you are not sure where to start, our pastel color palettes guide has six combinations you can copy.
Which mode suits you?
Here is a quick way to decide.
Pick color by number if you:
- want to relax without making decisions
- like seeing a picture come together exactly as designed
- enjoy the small win of finishing each number
- are coloring at the end of a long day
Pick free coloring if you:
- enjoy choosing colors and trying ideas
- want your picture to look different from everyone else's
- like experimenting with tools like ombre, sand and glitter
- are coloring with a child who has strong opinions about what color a dinosaur should be
Many people use both: color by number on busy days, free mode when they feel creative.

Tips for color by number
- Zoom in on small areas. Pinch to zoom so tiny details are easy to tap.
- Finish one number at a time. It keeps the color row tidy and makes the picture come together in calm stages.
- Try different tools on the same number. The color is fixed, but the texture is not. Sand, crayon and spray all give the same color a different feel.
Tips for free coloring
- Choose a palette before you start. Three to five colors plus one accent keeps the picture from getting busy.
- Start with the biggest area. It sets the mood for everything else.
- Leave one area white. A little white makes the colors around it look brighter.
- Use special tools on small areas. Glitter, neon or slime on one detail is more striking than on the whole picture.
What happens when you finish
Whichever mode you choose, a finished picture wakes up: the kitty blinks, the whale swims, the dumplings wiggle. Tap them to play. Then a timelapse plays your coloring from the first line to the last drop of paint, and the picture becomes a foil card in your card binder.
You can save the finished picture to your gallery or share it, or share the timelapse video.
The cozy part: no timers
There are no timers in either mode and nothing you can fail. A picture is finished when you finish it. That is a big part of why coloring games feel calm, along with the sounds of the tools. Our guide to what ASMR coloring is goes deeper into that side of it.
FAQ
Is color by number easier than free coloring?
It is simpler, because every color is decided for you. Free coloring is not harder to do, but it asks you to make more choices, which some people love and others find tiring at the end of the day.
Can I switch from color by number to free coloring?
Yes. In Colour Cozy you trace the lines first, then color by number or switch to free coloring. You can pick whichever suits your mood for each picture.
What happens if I pick the wrong color in color by number?
Nothing bad. A gentle hint shows you the right number for that area so you can fix it. There is no penalty and no timer.
Do I need to unlock colors for free coloring?
The Rainbow pack is free from the start, so you can color freely right away. Extra packs like Pastel and Galaxy can be unlocked once with an optional video or gems and stay unlocked.
